No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
